PRF in Implant Dentistry: How Your Own Blood Speeds Up Healing

The short answer: PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) is a healing concentrate made from a small sample of your own blood, taken at the start of your appointment. The blood is spun in a centrifuge for a few minutes, which separates a fibrin clot rich in platelets, growth factors and white blood cells. That clot is then placed directly into the surgical site — an extraction socket, an implant site, a bone graft. Because it is entirely your own biological material, there is no risk of rejection or allergic reaction, no additives, and no synthetic chemistry. In practice, PRF supports faster soft-tissue healing, better bone regeneration, and typically less swelling and discomfort after surgery. It is a standard part of my biological protocol for ceramic implants, extractions and bone procedures.


PRF in biological and implant dentistry

What PRF actually is

Tooth extractions. A socket filled with PRF heals with better bone quality and less risk of a painful dry socket. This matters enormously if you plan an implant at that site later — you are preserving the foundation.


Ceramic implant placement. PRF supports soft-tissue healing around the implant and helps create the conditions for solid integration with bone. Gum health around an implant is a long-term determinant of its success, and zirconia’s excellent tissue response works with PRF rather than against it.


Bone grafting and sinus lifts. Mixed with graft material, PRF creates a composite that handles better surgically and supports regeneration of the graft site.


Treating jawbone cavitations. After a poorly healed area is cleaned, PRF gives the bone the biological signal to regenerate properly this time — a core part of the protocol.


Gum recession and soft-tissue procedures. PRF membranes can support healing in periodontal and grafting work.


What patients actually notice

The clinical literature discusses growth factors and regeneration; patients notice simpler things:

•             Less swelling in the days after surgery

•             Less post-operative discomfort, and often reduced need for painkillers

•             Faster closure of the surgical site

•             A smoother recovery overall

I want to be measured here: PRF is a genuine adjunct that improves healing conditions — it is not magic, and it does not replace good surgical technique, proper planning or your own aftercare. A poorly planned implant does not become a good one because PRF was added. The value is real, and it is one component of a larger protocol.


Is PRF safe?

This is the part patients find most reassuring: PRF is 100% autologous — derived entirely from your own body, on the same day, in the same room.

•             No risk of rejection or immune reaction

•             No risk of disease transmission from donor material

•             No chemical additives or anticoagulants

•             No animal-derived or synthetic components

For patients who choose metal-free implants and biocompatible materials specifically to avoid introducing foreign substances, PRF is philosophically and clinically consistent: the healing material is you.

The only meaningful limitations are practical. Patients with certain blood disorders, those on specific anticoagulant therapy, or with very low platelet counts may not be suitable candidates — which is why medical history is reviewed before any surgical planning.


PRF and the biological approach

Conventional implantology asks: will the implant integrate? Biological dentistry asks a wider question: what conditions does this patient’s body need in order to heal well — and what am I introducing that it must cope with?

PRF fits that logic precisely. Rather than relying solely on synthetic membranes and foreign biomaterials, it uses the patient’s own regenerative biology as the primary tool. Combined with metal-free ceramic implants, careful site debridement and ozone disinfection, it forms a protocol built around supporting the body rather than working around it. It is also part of what I look for when patients ask how to evaluate an implant dentist — the protocol matters as much as the hardware.


Frequently asked questions

Does the blood draw hurt? It is the same as a standard blood test — a few seconds of discomfort at the start of an appointment where you are already receiving local anaesthetic for a surgical procedure. Patients consistently describe it as the least eventful part of the visit.


Does PRF cost extra? PRF requires a centrifuge, sterile kits and additional chair time, so practices handle it differently — in some it is quoted separately, in others it is included in the surgical fee. In my practice it is part of the biological surgical protocol rather than an upsell; ask for clarity on this in any quote you receive.


Is PRF the same as PRP? No. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is the earlier generation and requires anticoagulants to prepare. PRF is produced without any chemical additives and forms a fibrin scaffold that releases growth factors gradually over days rather than all at once. For dental surgery, PRF is generally the preferred approach.


Can PRF be used if I have a medical condition? Often yes, but it depends. Blood disorders, low platelet counts and certain anticoagulant medications require individual assessment. Always disclose your full medical history and medications before surgery.


Is PRF scientifically supported? Yes — PRF is an established technique in oral surgery, implantology and periodontology, with a substantial body of published research supporting its use in bone and soft-tissue regeneration. It is not an experimental or fringe method; it originated in mainstream oral surgery and has been adopted widely in biological dentistry because it aligns so naturally with its principles.
