The short answer: Both E.max and feldspathic porcelain are premium materials for beautiful, natural-looking veneers — they simply have different strengths. Feldspathic veneers are the most traditional type: built up layer by layer by a skilled ceramist, they can be made extremely thin and are prized for the most lifelike optical depth, which makes them a favourite for front teeth where appearance is everything. E.max (lithium disilicate) is a stronger, milled or pressed ceramic that offers excellent aesthetics with greater durability, making it more versatile across a wider range of cases. Neither is universally “better” — the right choice depends on your teeth, your goals, and the specific clinical situation, and both deliver outstanding results in trained hands.

What each material is

Feldspathic porcelain is the classic dental ceramic, used for over a century. It is not milled from a solid block — instead, a ceramist applies it in successive layers of powder and liquid onto a model, building the veneer by hand and firing it. This layering is what allows feldspathic veneers to be made exceptionally thin and to capture the subtle gradations of colour and translucency found in natural enamel. The result depends heavily on the artistry of the ceramist.


E.max is the brand name for lithium disilicate, a high-strength glass-ceramic introduced in modern dentistry. It is produced either by pressing or by computer-aided milling from a solid block, then characterised and glazed. E.max combines strong aesthetics with significantly higher mechanical strength than traditional feldspathic porcelain.

Where feldspathic veneers shine

Ultimate thinness. Because they are built by hand, feldspathic veneers can be made remarkably thin — which in the right case means preserving more natural tooth structure.

Optical depth. Layering different porcelains mimics the way natural enamel transmits and scatters light. For patients and dentists chasing the most natural possible result in the smile zone, this hand-crafted realism is the reason feldspathic remains a gold standard for aesthetics.

Bespoke artistry. Each veneer is an individual creation. In the hands of a master ceramist, the result can be extraordinary.

The trade-off: feldspathic porcelain is more delicate than E.max and demands exceptional skill from both dentist and ceramist. It is highly technique-sensitive — the material rewards expertise and is less forgiving of shortcuts.


Where E.max shines

Strength and durability. Lithium disilicate is considerably stronger than feldspathic porcelain, making it more resistant to fracture and suitable for a broader range of situations, including teeth under greater functional load.

Versatility. E.max performs well not only for aesthetic front-tooth veneers but also where more robustness is needed, which is why it has become one of the most widely used ceramics in modern cosmetic dentistry.

Predictability. Milled or pressed from a controlled, uniform material, E.max offers consistent, reliable results.

The trade-off: while E.max aesthetics are excellent, the very thinnest, most nuanced optical effects are where hand-layered feldspathic still holds a slight edge in expert hands.


So which is right for you?

This is genuinely a case-by-case decision, and both materials belong in a cosmetic practice rather than one replacing the other. The choice depends on several factors considered together:

1.          The aesthetic demand of the case — how much the result depends on the most subtle, layered realism, particularly in the smile zone.

2.          Functional load — how much biting and grinding force the veneers will face.

3.          How much tooth structure is being preserved — and how thin the veneers need to be.

4.          The overall treatment goal — a single tooth to match its neighbours is a different problem from a full smile design.

A skilled cosmetic dentist selects the material to fit the case, not the other way around. In practice, both materials can produce beautiful, natural, long-lasting results — the deciding factor is far more often the planning, preparation and ceramic work behind the veneer than the material name itself.
